8 July 1828: PASSPORT issued IN THE NAME OF HIS MAJESTY THE MOST AUGUST EMPEROR FRANCIS I KING OF HUNGARY, BOHEMIA AND LOMBARDY VENETIA, ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA to MARQUIS FRANCESCO MARIA CAVALLI, Knight of the Polish Order of St Stanislaus; giving him pass to go to SENIGALLIA (Papal States) with his domestic worker Giovanni Miall; valdity 3 Months *** Beautiful embossed dry seal of the EARL OF SPAUR, PRESIDENT OF THE IMPERIAL ROYAL GOVERNMENT OF THE VENETIAN PROVINCES, signed by him and co-signed by the General Chief of Police, and countersigned by Secretaries to the Authorities. As an extraordinary sign of respect no personal and phisiognomy details of the Marquis are filled in in the appropriate section at left. This extremely attractive Passport is endorsed on the back at transit and arrival points and most often hand stamped with official hand stamps including: CONSOLATO GENERALE PONTIFICIO IN VENICE (oval hand stamp featuring St Peter's Crossed Keys and the Three-tiered Papal Tiara); similar oval hand stamp FERRARA POLIZIA DELLA LEGAZIONE, and additional stampers for BOLOGNA, ROVIGO, VALLICE. *** The Marquis returned to Venice after 19 August. SENIGALLIA was well established as an attractive destination for Opera Lovers because it had more than one theatre; the peak season was Carnival (from Boxing Day to early Spring). At this time (1828) a new theatre called LA FENICE was under construction. Ancestors of the Cavalli dynasty were instrumental in promoting music and opera in Venice and Senigallia. MARQUIS CAVALLI was the IMPRESARIO of the prestigious SAN MOISE THEATRE IN VENICE; he protected primadonnas and was a friend of ROSSINI whose early operas premiered at the San Moise, including masterpieces such as: SIGNOR BRUSCHINO, CAMBIALE DI MATRIMONIO, INGANNO FELICE, EQUIVOCO STRAVAGANTE, and SCALA DI SETA *** Overall condition of the document is very, very fine for this type of ephemera. The document is in one piece (of course), well preserved -- creases caused by folding the travel document and some imperfections are to be expected for this type of memorabilia. *** AMAZINGLY IMPRESSIVE, UNIQUE, AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE!!
