THIS IS A MUST HAVE bibliophile publication. Giorgio Migliavacca ***************** PREFACE TO THE 2007 REPRINT This reprint gives the opportunity to the increasing number of military mail collectors to re-visit a very interesting series of articles on the 1936-7 campaign in East Africa written by Virgilio Lunardon, and published by the renowned Rivista Filatelica d’Italia while the campaign was still in progress. In fact, Lunardon’s articles have all the qualities of eyewitness news reports of postal history in the making. The reader will also realise that although 70 years have elapsed since their publication, these articles hold their ground and remain required reading for both the novice and the specialist. A checklist of all known FPO postmarks has been added; it is largely based on the research presented in the splendid volume on Italian FPOs in Africa published by AICPM (the Italian Society of Military Mail Collectors) about 30 years ago. Additionally, the checklist gives the market value for each postmark based on recent AICPM auctions, public auctions, and dealers price lists. Captions and annotations in English have been inserted where appropriate to disseminate the information on an international scale. Similarly a chronology of Italian East Africa covering the events, both historical and philatelic, between 1888 and 1952, has been added. I sincerely hope that the publication of this reprint will increase the number of collectors of this most interesting chapter of Italian and East African postal history. --- Giorgio Migliavacca

POPE ORMISDA 1 value MINT NEVER HINGED
Country: ITALY
Condition: POPE ORMISDA 1 value MINT NEVER HINGED
Description: 20 July 2014 € 0.70 stamp commemorating the 1500th anniversary of the ascent to the papal throne of the 52nd Pope of Christianity: Pope Hormisdas. On 20 July 514 he was unanimously elected Bishop of Rome. After the accession to the imperial throne of Justin and his nephew Justinian, both opposed to the Monophysites who had rejected the Council of Chalcedon, it was possible to reach an agreement (519 AD) with the signing by the patriarch of Constantinople of the act of faith drawn up by Hormisdas. He also reorganized ecclesiastically Spain after the Visigoth invasion. Although Hormisdas faced endless challenges and reigned during very complex times, his pontificate was effective and constructive. He died in 523. His son Silverius wrote his epitaph where mention of Hormisda’s fight against schisms is duly highlighted, as well as Hormisdas untiring efforts to reconcile the Church of the East and the West. He was married before ordination and had a son, the future Pope Silverius. According to the Church biographers, this was a unique case in the history of the papacy.

Description: ISSUED ON 14 JULY 2014 -- St. Camillus de Lellis (1550-1614) was the founder of the Congregation of the Ministers caring for the Sick. In 1584 he was ordained priest and in 1586 Pope Sixtus V gave papal recognition for the intitiatives of Camillus. The Congregation of the Servants of the Sick of St Camillus, the Daughters of St Camillus, the Secular Institutes of Missionaries of the Sick Christ Our Hope, of the Camillan Sisters and of the Lay Camillian Family, were born later as a result of St. Camillus’ spiritual influence. CARABINIERI POLICE ARMED FORCE MINIATURE SHEET MINT NEVER HINGED
Country: ITALY
Condition: CARABINIERI POLICE ARMED FORCE MINIATURE SHEET MINT NEVER HINGED
Description: 16 July 2014 -- Miniature sheet with 4 € 0.70 stamps -- The police armed force popularly known as the Carabinieri was established in 1814 by Victor Emmanuel I, King of Sardinia, as the Napoleonic era came to an end. The Carabinieri name comes from the weapon that every Carabiniere had -- the rifle (“carabina” in Italian). The colours of the plume (the scarlet and blue) were chosen on 25 June 1833 by King Charles Albert , whose life was later saved by the Carabinieri during the calamitous Battle of Pastrengo (30 April 1848).The Carabinieri played an exceedingly important role in the history of Italy, from the days leading to Italy’s unification, to the wars of Independence, to the tormented times of two world wars and most remarkably their loyalty to the nation during the demise of the fascist regime. The Carabinieri uniforms are very impressive: the basic uniform is in dark blue with silver braid around the collar and cuffs, edges trimmed in scarlet and epaulettes in silver. The mounted division had white fringes, and the infantry had light blue. Their headgear was a distinctive hat with two points. They still use a version of the historic uniform today for ceremonies. The four commemorative stamps (from top to bottom clockwise) capture the highlights and symbols of the Carabinieri’s history and significance: a detail of the bronze statue of the national monument to the policeman, designed by sculptor Edoardo Rubino and unvelied on 22 October 1933 at the Royal Gardens of Turin; the main facade of the Barracks “Bergia” in Turin, designed by Bernardo Antonio Vittone in 1737; the great frieze called “Patrol Police in the storm” created by the Florentine sculptor Antonio Berti in 1973; and the superb logo created for the bicentennial of the institution of the Carabinieri with the distinctive frieze consisting of a grenade, which shows the monogram RI topped by a flame, a scroll with their motto “EVER FAITHFUL THROUGHOUT THE CENTURIES” and the flag flanked by the dates 1814 2014.To complete the miniature sheet, at left, is the 1872 painting “Mounted Carabinieri” by Giovanni Brunori.

Condition: TIBERIUS BRIDGE RIMINI 1 VALUE MINT NEVER HINGED
Description: The stamp depicts the Tiberius Bridge in Rimini, which has survived earthquakes, floods, barbarian invasions and many wars. The Tiberius Bridge is one of the few bridges in the region spared by the retreating German army during the last phase of World War II. Since the early Roman Empire, the bridge represented a crossroad where important traffic arteries branched out: namely the Via Emilia and the Via Popilia. Construction of the bridge started in 14 AD under Emperor Augustus, however, it was not completed until 21 AD under Tiberius, whence its name.

1911 FLORENCE ITALY AIR RALLY POSTER STAMP magenta MINT - CERTIFICATE

Condition: 1911 FLORENCE ITALY AIR RALLY POSTER STAMP magenta MINT - CERTIFICATE
Description: FROM DR MIGLIAVACCA'S CERTIFICATE -- ITALY, FLORENCE, CAMPO DI MARTE, 7-14 MAY 1911: monochrome, magenta, AIR RALLY Poster Stamp, mint, original gum, featuring the same design of the official postcard issued for the historic event celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy [Longhi, Aerofilia Italiana: 456 11BXh]. Famous pioneer aviators took part in the event; however the Rally also saw the unprecedented participation of two female pioneer aviators: Helene Dutrieu - who won the King's Cup — and Jeanne Herveux. I have examined the above-described Poster Stamp — which is photographically reproduced* here: in my opinion it is in fine condition and genuine in all respects, including its gum. I signed this Poster Stamp with my initials - “GM” - in pencil———
