POSTAL HISTORY OF ITALY & EUROPE RENAISSANCE
Country: ITALY
Condition: RENAISSANCE POSTS ITALY & EUROPE
Description: POSTAL HISTORY OF ITALY & EUROPE RENAISSANCE NEW NEW POSTAL COMMUNICATIONS DURING THE RENAISSANCE IN EUROPE ************** SIMONE TASSO E LE POSTE DI MILANO NEL RINASCIMENTO ************ SIMON TAXIS AND THE POSTS OF THE STATE OF MILAN DURING THE RENAISSANCE ************* By Giorgio Migliavacca & Tarcisio Bottani -- 1st Edition, May 2008 -- HARD BOUND, COLOR DUST JACKET -- 238 pages, 8" x 12", illustrations throughout, mostly in color -- In Italian and English -- This book deals with the creation of a modern postal service in Italy and Europe. A fast and reliable postal service that also served private citizens and businessmen was introduced by the Taxis family in the early 1500s. Simon Taxis was one of the top three members of the family and his great contribution to the creation of a modern postal system is discussed in great detail in this exceedingly interesting book. The efficiency and speed of the postal system created by the Taxis remained unchallenged until the introduction of the train in the 1800s. ************ Scholars and researchers of postal history and postal communications, and historians in general, will find this volume extremely useful as it unearths a huge amount of new research and information not only at an Italian level but at a European level with emphasis on FRANCE * GERMANY * SPAIN * BELGIUM * AUSTRIA ******* From the foreword to this impressive volume we quote: *** FOREWORD *** The Taxis postal empire that began in the 14th century in northern Italy flourished in the social and cultural transformations of the Renaissance. Timely, reliable communication – the hallmark of the Taxis system and a transformative force throughout history – still underpins civilization in the 21st century. During the Renaissance and in the ensuing centuries, the Taxis system spread throughout Europe and the family's rise to the highest ranks of nobility made them prominent personages in the history of their respective countries. Thanks to research by European scholars during the last 120 years, the Taxis family boasts a rich bibliography. During the last decades of the 20th century, the growing popularity of postal history generated greater interest and the information gathered by earlier scholars has been supplemented by new research in archival sources. The book you hold in your hands is the result of just such new, in-depth research carried out by the co-authors in archives in Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, and Austria over a span of three decades. In 1991, under the auspices of the local municipality, a Taxis Postal History and History Museum was opened at Cornello dei Tasso, near Bergamo – the cradle of the dynasty. The Cornello museum has gathered a remarkable quantity of documentation on the Taxis family – as postmasters general, art collectors, and members of the European nobility – that makes clear their vital and varied contributions to economic life, culture, religion, and diplomacy. Torquato Tasso, a relative of Simon Taxis and best known for his epic Jerusalem Delivered, remains to this day at the pinnacle of Italian poetry. Among its many praiseworthy initiatives, the Cornello museum has been instrumental in publishing an impressive series of volumes on major personalities of the Taxis family. The museum has also established an ongoing cultural collaboration with the princely family of Thurn und Taxis, who own and oversee a prestigious postal museum at Regensburg. With its array of detail on rates and routes and relationships, this new volume brings to life the colorful, challenging world of the Taxis postal couriers in the 16th century. **** Bill Welch *** THIS IS A MUST HAVE bibliophile publication. *** VERY HEAVY BOOK TO SHIP

1828 VENICE PASSPORT FOR MARQUIS CAVALLI OPERA IMPRESARIO
Condition: 1828 VENICE PASSPORT FOR MARQUIS CAVALLI OPERA IMPRESARIO
Description: 8 July 1828: PASSPORT issued IN THE NAME OF HIS MAJESTY THE MOST AUGUST EMPEROR FRANCIS I KING OF HUNGARY, BOHEMIA AND LOMBARDY VENETIA, ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA to MARQUIS FRANCESCO MARIA CAVALLI, Knight of the Polish Order of St Stanislaus; giving him pass to go to SENIGALLIA (Papal States) with his domestic worker Giovanni Miall; valdity 3 Months *** Beautiful embossed dry seal of the EARL OF SPAUR, PRESIDENT OF THE IMPERIAL ROYAL GOVERNMENT OF THE VENETIAN PROVINCES, signed by him and co-signed by the General Chief of Police, and countersigned by Secretaries to the Authorities. As an extraordinary sign of respect no personal and phisiognomy details of the Marquis are filled in in the appropriate section at left. This extremely attractive Passport is endorsed on the back at transit and arrival points and most often hand stamped with official hand stamps including: CONSOLATO GENERALE PONTIFICIO IN VENICE (oval hand stamp featuring St Peter's Crossed Keys and the Three-tiered Papal Tiara); similar oval hand stamp FERRARA POLIZIA DELLA LEGAZIONE, and additional stampers for BOLOGNA, ROVIGO, VALLICE. *** The Marquis returned to Venice after 19 August. SENIGALLIA was well established as an attractive destination for Opera Lovers because it had more than one theatre; the peak season was Carnival (from Boxing Day to early Spring). At this time (1828) a new theatre called LA FENICE was under construction. Ancestors of the Cavalli dynasty were instrumental in promoting music and opera in Venice and Senigallia. MARQUIS CAVALLI was the IMPRESARIO of the prestigious SAN MOISE THEATRE IN VENICE; he protected primadonnas and was a friend of ROSSINI whose early operas premiered at the San Moise, including masterpieces such as: SIGNOR BRUSCHINO, CAMBIALE DI MATRIMONIO, INGANNO FELICE, EQUIVOCO STRAVAGANTE, and SCALA DI SETA *** Overall condition of the document is very, very fine for this type of ephemera. The document is in one piece (of course), well preserved -- creases caused by folding the travel document and some imperfections are to be expected for this type of memorabilia. *** AMAZINGLY IMPRESSIVE, UNIQUE, AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE!!

1832 VENICE PASSPORT FOR PROFESSOR OF ITALIAN ELOQUENCE PIER ALESSANDRO PARAVIA
Condition: 1832 VENICE PASSPORT FOR PROFESSOR OF ITALIAN ELOQUENCE PIER ALESSANDRO PARAVIA
Description: 12 October 1832 - PASSPORT issued IN THE NAME OF HIS MAJESTY THE MOST AUGUST EMPEROR FRANCIS I KING OF HUNGARY, BOHEMIA AND LOMBARDY VENETIA, ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA to ITALIAN ELOQUENCE PROFESSOR PIER ALESSANDRO PARAVIA for his trip to TURIN (Torino) *** Beautiful embossed dry seal of the EARL OF SPAUR, PRESIDENT OF THE IMPERIAL ROYAL GOVERNMENT OF THE VENETIAN PROVINCES, signed by him and co-signed by BARON PASCOTINIZ. As an extraordinary sign of respect no personal and phisiognomy details of Professor Paravia are filled in in the appropriate section at left. Amazingly enough the document is not co-signed by the General Chief of Police. Most importantly Paravia's signature is placed in the appropriate section at lower left, just above the dry seal. The verso shows a plethora of well struck hand stamps such as: MILAN - VISA OF THE IMPERIAL ROYAL GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF POLICE -- a similar one for VERONA where the document was officially repaired by the authorities (evidence of this is their hand stamps over the patches) -- border with Kingdom of Sardinia Police Quarters at BOFFALORA -- KINGDOM OF SARDINIA CONSULATE IN MILAN with crowned Coat of Arms, beautifully struck; stamped and signed in Turin by the AUSTRIAN CONSULATE IN TORINO; stamped and signed at the ROYAL SECRETARIAT OF THE FOREIGN OFFICE OF THE KINGDOM OF SARDINIA in Torino; then below at lower left corner a most beautiful strike of red oval hand stamp ROYAL GOVERNMENT IN TORINO - PASSPORT OFFICE (SAVOY EAGLE HOLDING SAVOY SHIELD) -- plus unusual border hand stamp CARABINIERI REALI PRESSO IL PONTE TICINO at SAN MARTINO SICCOMARIO (repeated at bottom right corner); and POLIZIA GENERALE COMANDO DI NOVARA (crowned Savoy Coat of Arms) ***** Pier Alessandro Paravia (1797 - 1857) was an Italian writer, scholar, philanthropist and professor of Italian eloquence at the University of Turin. Born in Zadar, he grew up in Venice. In 1818 he graduated in law at Padua and served in Venice as a state official for twelve years, until 1832 when he was called to the chair of Eloquence of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Turin. He had already published biographies of writers and artists, and a popular translation of the Letters of Pliny the Younger. In Torino he commenced an even more prolific period, in which he wrote studies on Torquato Tasso and Ariosto; essays on Provençal literature and even Chinese novels (which he was one of the first to study in Italy). In addition to literature, he was also interested in history and politics. Paravia was monitored by the Austro-Hungarians, owing to his fondness of Italian patriotic ideals *** Overall condition of the document is fine for this type of ephemera. The document is in one piece (of course), well preserved -- creases caused by folding the travel document and some imperfections are to be expected for this type of memorabilia. The contemporary patches and repairs were done carefully by the authorities and are not disfiguring. Most of the hand stamps are clearly struck...a rare occurrence *** AMAZINGLY IMPRESSIVE, UNIQUE, AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE!!
