POSTAL HISTORY OF ITALY & EUROPE RENAISSANCE

Condition: RENAISSANCE POSTS ITALY & EUROPE
Description: POSTAL HISTORY OF ITALY & EUROPE RENAISSANCE NEW NEW POSTAL COMMUNICATIONS DURING THE RENAISSANCE IN EUROPE ************** SIMONE TASSO E LE POSTE DI MILANO NEL RINASCIMENTO ************ SIMON TAXIS AND THE POSTS OF THE STATE OF MILAN DURING THE RENAISSANCE ************* By Giorgio Migliavacca & Tarcisio Bottani -- 1st Edition, May 2008 -- HARD BOUND, COLOR DUST JACKET -- 238 pages, 8" x 12", illustrations throughout, mostly in color -- In Italian and English -- This book deals with the creation of a modern postal service in Italy and Europe. A fast and reliable postal service that also served private citizens and businessmen was introduced by the Taxis family in the early 1500s. Simon Taxis was one of the top three members of the family and his great contribution to the creation of a modern postal system is discussed in great detail in this exceedingly interesting book. The efficiency and speed of the postal system created by the Taxis remained unchallenged until the introduction of the train in the 1800s. ************ Scholars and researchers of postal history and postal communications, and historians in general, will find this volume extremely useful as it unearths a huge amount of new research and information not only at an Italian level but at a European level with emphasis on FRANCE * GERMANY * SPAIN * BELGIUM * AUSTRIA ******* From the foreword to this impressive volume we quote: *** FOREWORD *** The Taxis postal empire that began in the 14th century in northern Italy flourished in the social and cultural transformations of the Renaissance. Timely, reliable communication – the hallmark of the Taxis system and a transformative force throughout history – still underpins civilization in the 21st century. During the Renaissance and in the ensuing centuries, the Taxis system spread throughout Europe and the family's rise to the highest ranks of nobility made them prominent personages in the history of their respective countries. Thanks to research by European scholars during the last 120 years, the Taxis family boasts a rich bibliography. During the last decades of the 20th century, the growing popularity of postal history generated greater interest and the information gathered by earlier scholars has been supplemented by new research in archival sources. The book you hold in your hands is the result of just such new, in-depth research carried out by the co-authors in archives in Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, and Austria over a span of three decades. In 1991, under the auspices of the local municipality, a Taxis Postal History and History Museum was opened at Cornello dei Tasso, near Bergamo – the cradle of the dynasty. The Cornello museum has gathered a remarkable quantity of documentation on the Taxis family – as postmasters general, art collectors, and members of the European nobility – that makes clear their vital and varied contributions to economic life, culture, religion, and diplomacy. Torquato Tasso, a relative of Simon Taxis and best known for his epic Jerusalem Delivered, remains to this day at the pinnacle of Italian poetry. Among its many praiseworthy initiatives, the Cornello museum has been instrumental in publishing an impressive series of volumes on major personalities of the Taxis family. The museum has also established an ongoing cultural collaboration with the princely family of Thurn und Taxis, who own and oversee a prestigious postal museum at Regensburg. With its array of detail on rates and routes and relationships, this new volume brings to life the colorful, challenging world of the Taxis postal couriers in the 16th century. **** Bill Welch *** THIS IS A MUST HAVE bibliophile publication. *** VERY HEAVY BOOK TO SHIP

EUROPA POSTALE: EARLY 1600s OTTAVIO CODOGNO'S POSTAL GUIDE
Country: ITALY
Condition: EUROPA POSTALE: EARLY 1600s OTTAVIO CODOGNO'S POSTAL GUIDE
Description: Clemente Fedele, Armando Serra, Marco Gerosa, - Europa Postale - L’opera di Ottavio Codogno luogotenente dei Tasso nella Milano Seicentesca - Postal Europe. The Postal Guides by Ottavio Codogno, Deputy Postmaster General of the Tassis in 1600s Milan. In Italian, with some sections translated into English. 286 pages 6” x 8¼”, perfect bound, illustrations, large map of Postal Routes of Europe, including sea and waterways routes. 2014, Tassis Museum, Camerata Cornello.  Available from virginstamps.com ****** CARNEADES! who was he?—thought Don Abbondio to himself, as he sat in his arm-chair, in a room upstairs, with a small volume lying open before him, just as Perpetua entered to bring him the message.—Carneades! I seem to have heard or read this name; it must be some man of learning—some great scholar of antiquity; it is just like one of their names; but whoever was he? [Alessandro Manzoni, The Bethrothed] So begins Chapter VIII of I Promessi Sposi. The vast majority of readers and even academicians, may ask a similar question: Ottavio Codogno! who was he? Such a reaction would be justified because his name was universally forgotten, not even relegated to footnotes, for a few centuries after his death. Then came the 1970s’ revival of postal history and in 1980 I was so brave - a term actually used by the dean of the history institute at my University - to economically reprint one of Codogno’s postal guides - namely the elusive 1620 Venice edition of his Itinerario. By then, the name of Codogno had already made the rounds among a few postal history scholars; however very little was known about him. This was not to remain so for too long and Armando Serra was the first to carry out serious research about this man and present it as a paper at a 1993 International Congress on Communications between Europe and the Americas held in Madrid. Marco Gerosa has researched and written a biography of Ottavio Codogno who was the Deputy Postmaster General of the State of Milan. Born presumably in 1570, or a year or two later, in his early 20s he was enrolled by the Milanese posts as a courier. After he proved his worth he was given more sensitive assignments. By the turn of the century Ottavio was promoted to the office of Deputy Postmaster General. The son of Simon Tassis, Ruggero, had been Postmaster General from 1556 to 1588, when he died. His widow, Lucina Cattaneo Tassis was given the authority to manage and administer the Milanese post office. Not a small achievement for a woman of those days. Codogno’s first postal guide was published in Milan in 1608, it was titled “The New Itinerary of the Post of the entire world. With addenda on the way to address (mail) to all places. Most Useful not only to the Princes’ Secretaries, but also to the Clergymen and Merchants”. The book had a sensational success and edition after edition, Codogno made revisions and additions. From the 460 pages of the 1608 first edition, Codogno’s 1623 “Compendium of the Posts”, 573 pages, included information for travellers such as currencies “needed for the journeys, the length of the Posts...Journeys for worship, and guide for Pilgrims. With a discourse on the seven Churches of Milan...devotions, and other curious things about the City. As well as the way to address (mail) to all places, and moreover Fairs.” During Codogno’s life time at least seven editions were published (1608, 1611, 1616, 1620, 1623, 1628, and 1630) followed by two reprints (1666, 1676) decades after his death by plague in 1630 - the very same plague Manzoni adopted as the backdrop of his masterpiece of Italian literature mentioned earlier. After four centuries, the best selling travel and postal guide by Codogno is back in a new and masterfully annotated edition. Indeed, this is a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the communications modalities of early modern Europe. This guide enhances our appreciation of the history of a technique that is often underestimated and misunderstood. In a few words, Codogno’s book tells us with a wealth of details about a genuine history-changing Italian success story, beginning with the original name brand “poste”, coined for the first time ever in Northern Italy and exported all over the globe. The great importance of this volume is further augmented by a preface in English and Italian by Professor Mark Brayshay of the University of Plymouth, UK, and by remarkable contributions and essays by Clemente Fedele, “The Postal Geography of Ottavio Codogno” (with an English translation); Marco Gerosa, “For a biography of Ottavio Codogno, lieutenant of the posts of Milan and author of postal guides (in Italian); and Armando Serra, “Treatise, Itinerary by Codogno, especially the 1608, 1616 and 1623 editions, with notes about before and after Codogno’s times, up until the 1800s twilight of the horse-powered posts” (in Italian). As Fedele points out, “this new edition of Codogno’s itineraries is characterised by the identification of the ancient post horse stations with a view, when possible, to associate the old names with the modern ones. Such details would broaden the interest while catching the attention of local scholars and cultural institutions, and, in turn, generate reverberations in the tourism sector.” The special touch of this production is a postal map, in Fedele’s words: “the attached postal map will give a clear image of the postal geography of the times of Codogno. It offers a birds-eye view, not exclusively of the European posts as it spans from Constantinople to the ports to and from the Americas. There is special consideration for the postal highways Italy-Spain, made even more important strategically because of the centrality of Milan, the town that was the Author’s operational base and where he lived too.” This well produced book has the undeniable virtue of shedding much light and providing new and valuable information on organised European postal communications between the end of the 16th century and the dawn of the 17th. Last but not least, the introduction, in Italian and English, by Gianfranco Lazzarini, Mayor of Camerata Cornello, “soul and engine” of all the initiatives that orbit around the Tassis Museum, delves into the two emerging forms of communication that changed Europe, from the 1400s onward, and became known throughout the old continent and beyond as horse post and letter post. This publication is a “must have” for any serious postal historian and for those who are interested in communications in general. Reviewed by Giorgio Migliavacca

Acts of the First International Symposium, Cornello dei Tasso, 1-3 June 2012. In Italian and English, with two papers also in German. 328 pages, 9¼” x 11¾”, perfect bound, illustrated throughout (black & white). Published by Museo dei Tasso e della Storia Postale, Camerata Cornello, 2012. Available from virginstamps.com  ********************** Anyone familiar with symposia and congresses knows well that acts may take years to be published; however, exceptions exists and they are a symptom of vitality and interest in a given discipline or branch of learning. Despite the untouchable August holidays, when 90 percent of Italy comes to a halt, the acts of this symposium were published within three months - need I say that the interest in postal history and in our instance, early modern postal history, is beginning to get the attention of the international world of academia? Papers presented at this symposium were delivered by top Italian, Greek, Austrian, German, Spanish, and Belgian academicians - 22 of them! As would be expected the main focus is on the role played by members of the Tassis family in the development of modern posts. After an introduction by Adriano Cattani, executive director of the Tassis Museum, Tarcisio Bottani dwells upon the wills of Ruggero, Janetto and Leonardo Tassis. As a preamble to his most recent book, Bonaventura Foppolo offers well researched biographies of members of the Venetian branch of the Tassis family who held the post of Imperial Postmaster General in Venice from the early 1500s to the late 1700s. The postal enterprise of the Venetian Tassis was known as the postal service to and from Augusta and the Flanders in the city of Venice. Based on research he carried out at the Venice State Archive, Giorgio Plumidis offers his paper on the organisation of the Tassis family postal service from a Venetian perspective. Hailing from Mantua, noted postal historian Lorenzo Carra is undoubtedly the best qualified scholar to give an exhaustive discourse on the inter-relation his town has had with the Tassis family through the centuries. Clemente Fedele examines the new millennium communications revolution to make us understand better the postal revolution of the 1500s. In his dissertation titled “Which postal service in the XVIth Century?” he explains that the innovation that changed history was the postal speed achieved in the 1500s using mounted couriers and setting up postal stations at regular intervals - the engine was the horse, and it remained so until the railroad arrived. The business sector noticed the speedy delivery of mail and demand, and possible pressure, for extending the service to the general public was palpable and inevitable. Marco Gerosa is a highly skilled researcher and his paper titled “Important figures of the Milanese Postal Service, from Simone to Ruggero Tassis” is truly valuable. Fabrizio Dal Vera illustrates the prospects for research on the Tassis family in Tyrol. The potential of research on the Trent postal stations run by the Tassis Bordogna family is convincigly discussed by Francesca Brunet. Vincenzo Fardella de Quernfort adds new information in his paper on the Tassis documents in Sicily. Bergamo scholar Gianni Molinari makes us aware of the palatial acquisitions of the rich and famous Tassis in the region and beyond. Gabriele Medolago continues on the same theme and elaborates on it. The scholarly presentation on the postal history of Bavaria made by Peter Styra adds a really important tessera to the Tassis mosaic. Equally interesting is the contribution of Fabian Fiederer about the end of the Thurn and Taxis mail system in the XIXth Century. Warmly welcomed is the paper of Julia Benavent about the Tassis family letters at the Biblioteca Nacional de España and Real Biblioteca in Madrid. Also from Spain, Maria Antonia Blat guides us through the Tassis family collections in the Simancas Archive. I must confess that as soon as I received this precious volume I rushed to read Armando Serra’s about Milan’s staffette in the mid-1500s. The Tassis documents preserved at the Municipal Library of Besançon, France, are introduced by Giulia Grata. James Van der Linden, a noted Belgian postal historian, contributes a remarkable essay on the Thurn and Taxis postal administration in the Spanish Netherlands from 1492-1713. To conclude this splendid collection of essays comes Vincent Schouberechts with his paper on the history of the horse post through a postmaster’s family archives in Belgian Luxemburg, 1621-1811. The volume is lavishly produced and replete with good illustrations. It is wise to secure a copy now as many earlier volumes published by the Tassis Museum are now hard to find.
