CONCISE POSTAL HISTORY OF PERSIA by MIGLIAVACCA
Country: IRAN
Condition: CONCISE POSTAL HISTORY OF PERSIA by MIGLIAVACCA
Description: VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND BOOK -- CONCISE POSTAL HISTORY OF PERSIA by G. Migliavacca (48 pages - in English, last copies available) - A wealth of previously unavailable information has been included in this book which is not a compendium but a concise presentation of the history of Postal Communications in Persia, widely known as Iran. The earliest recorded postal history of this fascinating country goes back to the days of Cyrus, King of Persia, when a network of roads was created to speed up delivery of couriers and messengers. In 1620 AD Europe already knew how to send mail to distant lands, including the East Indies and, en-route, to Persia. The mid-1800s saw improved communications by sea, and a telegraph line served Persia. This useful book provides information about the early postmarks, the introduction of adhesive postage stamps, the British Post Offices of the Persian Gulf, the 1856-8 Field Force in Persia, postal communications with Russia and Turkey, the expansion of maritime services, lake’s mail, and important statistics of the years from 1885 to 1911. The new century saw improvements to the postal service and the author supplies information from the Iranian reports on the postal service, including postal rates of the years from 1868 to 1937. Additionally there is a chart of the postal routes and network in 1912 gleaned from primary sources. The elusive topic of the Exchange Bureaux in Iran during the early part of the 20th century is also discussed in detail. This is not a big book, but it is essential reading and reference and almost after 30 years from its publication it remains the only book on the subject. However, it has been learned that an expanded version is in the making.
