EDICT OF MILAN 1700th ANNIV 4 MAXIMUM CARDS SAN MARINO
Country: SAN MARINO
Condition: EDICT OF MILAN 1700th ANNIV 4 MAXIMUM CARDS SAN MARINO
Description: 1700th ANNIVERSARY OF THE EDICT OF MILAN – Italy, San Marino and Vatican issued stamps in 2013 to celebrate the famous edict that changed world’s history. HERE ARE 4 SAN MARINO MAXIMUM CARDS reflecting the 4 pictorial aspects of the stamps. One stamp features two figures on the throne, taken from the bas-relief of the portal of the Cathedral of Milan, and represents those who issued the Edict: Constantine on the left and Licinius on the right. One of San Marino’s stamps features the portrait of CONSTANTINE THE GREAT taken from a numismatic silver medallion minted at TICINUM (modern PAVIA) found near Salonika and held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Wien. The medallion shows the symbols of Christianity associated with the official image of the emperor. Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Constantine, facing, holding bridle of horse and cruciform sceptre and shield. (Christogram badge on front of helmet). On the stamp, behind the medallion the map of Europe shows Mediolanum and the volute of a parchment, referring to the drafting of the Edict, with the symbol of the Chrismon of Constantine. In February 313, Constantine I, emperor controlling the western part of the Roman Empire and Licinius, controlling the Balkans, met in Milan and, among other things, agreed to treat the Christians benevolently.

FRESCOES POPE SYLVESTER & EMPEROR CONSTANTINE 4 VATICAN MAXIMUM CARDS
Country: VATICAN
Condition: FRESCOES POPE SYLVESTER & EMPEROR CONSTANTINE 4 VATICAN MAXIMUM CARDS
Description: The Edict of Milan established freedom of worship and marked an end to religious persecution by recognizing the right to profess one’s own faith. The declaration was issued in 313 AD in Milan, where Costantia, daughter of Constantine (emperor of the west) married Licinius (emperor of the east). From the beginning, the Christians would not participate in the imperial cult which claimed the divine status of the Roman emperors. For this reason, the Christians were opposed by the political and religious authorities. The Christian martyrs, the faithful who gave their lives for the faith, are eternal witnesses to the ferociousness of this persecution. To mark the 1700th anniversary of the “Edict of Milan” the Vatican has issued a series of three postal values and a mini sheet, the latest in a joint issue with Italy, depicting scenes of Constantine and Pope Sylvester I taken from the recently restored 13th century frescoes in the Oratory of Saint Sylvester at the Santi Quattro Coronati Basilica in Rome. Pictured here are 4 limited edition Maximum Cards with the four stamps issued by the Vatican. The 1.90 e denomination shows Pope Sylvester showing the portraits of St Peter and St Paul to the Emperor Constine the Great. The 2.50 e depicts Pope Sylvester returning to Rome to meet Emperor Contantine; 0.70 e depicts the Emperor Constine being baptized by Pope Sylvester; 0.85 Emperor Constantine I presents the imperial tiara to Pope Sylvester.

DAVID Napoleon at St Bernard MAXIMUM CARD
Country: FRANCE
Condition: DAVID Napoleon at St Bernard MAXIMUM CARD
Description: Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) was a truly great painter. After being involved in the French revolution he evolved politically and became a great supporter of Napoleon. David’s personal artistic style developed from the years spent studying in Italy. This 1803 painting by David celebrates Napoleon crossing of the Alps at St Bernard in 1800, leading his army to take over northern Italy. The painting glorifies the Emperor and evokes other historical figures who crossed the Alps to conquer Italy, Hannibal and Charlemagne whose names, together with the name of Bonaparte are carved on the rocks at the bottom of the painting. None of the three completely succeeded, and whatever success they had lasted for a relatively short time. The names carved on the stones were added at the prompting of Napoleon himself who wanted to be associated with the great figures of the past. A great critic commented that: “Though David’s depiction of Napoleon is clearly an image from the past, the painting unmistakably conveys the timeless notion of a man in control, with power over both himself and the natural world, the forces of destiny swirling around him.” Pictured here is a maximum card featuring David’s famous painting matched with a recent stamp issued by France.
