LARGE COMMEMORATIVE DATESTAMPS OF JAPAN
Country: JAPAN
Condition: LARGE COMMEMORATIVE DATESTAMPS OF JAPAN
Description: BRAND NEW COPY * JUST VERY LIGHT HORIZONTAL CREASE OF THE SPINE AT THE VERY TOP DUE TO POSTAL TRANSIT (RATHER INSIGNIFICANT and HARDLY NOTICEABLE...MENTIONED FOR ACCURACY) -- 180 pages A4, COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS THROUGHOUT ****** Commemorative Datestamps of Japan This monograph forms a companion volume to the author’s The Variant Color Datestamps [VCDs] of Japan published as ISJP Monograph 19 in 2005. VCDs commemorated events of a local nature or of comparatively minor importance at the national level, whereas the Large Commemorative Datestamps (LCDs) commemorated events of major national importance in Japan, in particular promoting the monarchy, the army and navy, the hosting of expositions, and the iconography of State Shintō. Not surprisingly, there have been a number of previous compilations of the LCDs authorized for use in Japan in the period 1902-1944. However, this study is by far the most comprehensive produced to date, building upon the previous compilations, adding information from other sources, identifying inconsistencies, and correcting errors. Its comprehensive listing includes not only the title of each event commemorated, the details of its authorized post offices, and dates of use, but also large pictorial examples of each LCD. In addition, the majority of entries provide accompanying narratives and notes principally about the elements of the LCD design and the event it commemorates. This might also include additional illustrations, which are typically stamps issued to commemorate the same event. This is the first complete listing of LCDs to provide such accompanying information, and sets it apart from compilations which have preceded it. The thoroughness of the author is evident throughout the monograph, and probably best illustrated by his listing of kanji names for the authorized post offices as the names appear on each LCD, not in the form currently used. This innovation better assists readers in identifying LCD markings which they might obtain.

JAPAN: A Specialized Listing of the Japanese Occupation of CHINA
Country: JAPAN
Condition: JAPAN: A Specialized Listing of the Japanese Occupation of CHINA
Description: A Special Item FROM THE ANTIQUARIAN & MODERNARIAN OF POSTAL HISTORY & PHILATELY Jack G. Nielsen, Ralph A. Weil, A Specialized Listing of the Japanese Occupation Stamps of China, 1995 46pp. in English The two authors, both advanced collectors of Japanese Occupation stamps of China, undertook this research study after identifying that the three specialized catalogs on the subject differed substantially in their listings of these stamps. The three catalogs are the Colour-illustrated Stamp Catalogue of China, commonly referred to as 'Chan' after its editor Chan Shu-hou;Ma's Illustrated Catalogue of the Stamps of China, commonly referred to as 'MA'; and the Japanese Stamp Specialized Catalog (JSCA). The stamps are listed in Chan catalog order with the corresponding catalog numbers for not only the MA and JSCA catalogs where listed, but also for the Scott and Stanley Gibbons catalogs. Therefore, the tables in this monograph not only provide information on the disparities in the listings amongst the five catalogs, but also provide a concordance between their catalog numbers. The contents include Japanese Ocupation stamps used in provinces in North China, Inner Mongolia, Central China, and South China. NO ILLUSTRATIONS *** NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

JAPAN FORGERIES IMITATIONS DRAGON STAMPS Monograph 4
Condition: JAPAN FORGERIES IMITATIONS DRAGON STAMPS Monograph 4
Description: Forgeries and Imitations of the Dragon Stamps of Japan Japan's Dragon stamps have been extensively forged by several different forgers. This 24 page monograph details all the forgeries and imitations of these stamps known at the time of its publication in 1971. This includes forgeries created by Japanese producers Wada Kotarō, Kamigataya, and Hirose, the Spiro Brothers in Germany, as well as creations by unknown individuals and even official imitations. The Wada forgeries consist of different (either six or eight) design types within each plate, and an enlarged image of each different design type for each denomination is provided. It also defines and lists the various 'states' of the 6-stamp plates, produced primarily by the relocation of the sankō (reference) or mozō (imitation) incorporated in their designs. This monograph also includes informative biographical facts about the producers, particularly Wada, and still remains the principal source of this information IN ENGLISH PHOTOCOPIED & STITCHED REPRINT AS PRODUCED BY THE PUBLISHERS * NOT AVAILABLE OTHERWISE - very few copies in stock...ORDER NOW NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

JAPAN FIELDPOST IN SIBERIA MANCHURIA SAKHALIN 1918 1925
Condition: JAPAN FIELDPOST IN SIBERIA MANCHURIA SAKHALIN 1918 1925
Description: IN ENGLISH ** ILLUSTRATED * 96 pages 8” x 11” + MAPS -- Edward J. Rasmussen has rendered a very comprehensive analysis of his monograph's subject, starting with a preliminary historical essay which, with reference to fold-out maps at the back of the publication, provides a very good context to understand the fieldpost operations. This is followed by a detailed discussion of the fieldpost incorporating many illustrations of used envelopes and cards, which include translations of the more commonly used identifying marks and postal inscriptions encountered. Many excellent reference tables and listings are provided including one with a full listing of fieldpost offices, together with their opening and closing dates, location, operating unit name, and earliest and latest recorded postmarks; while another listing provides the postal volume and number of postal personnel at each location. The Concordance for Place Names is an additional useful tool as turning contemporary Japanese renderings of Russian names into Roman letters often produces a name very far from the Russian original.

Country: JAPAN
Condition: JAPANESE MILITARY BURMA THAILAND RAILROAD 1942 1945
Description: IN ENGLISH ** ILLUSTRATED * 58 pages 8” x 11” + MAPS ------ Herbert S. Herman, has expertly woven a short narrative of the construction of the Burma-Thailand railroad with a study of the railroad's postal facilities, and its outgoing and incoming mail. It is profusely illustrated with copies of covers and cards, the majority of which have been drawn from the personal collections of correspondence between a small number of allied ex-POWs and their families. Mr. Herman incorporates personal details of some of these ex-servicemen, including their photographs, and biographical details of their capture and internment. The monograph also includes a number of comprehensive and detailed listings, including catalogs of postal stationery, assigned Japanese military units, and locations of POW camps.

JAPAN FORGERIES ** The Tourist Sheets and Booklets of Japan
Country: JAPAN
Condition: JAPAN FORGERIES ** The Tourist Sheets and Booklets of Japan
Description: The Tourist Sheets and Booklets of Japan IN ENGLISH ** 2004. In full color, 110pp. The most prolific producer of forgeries of Japan's early Dragon, Cherry Blossom and Koban stamps was Wada Kotarō. Wada originated the concept of affixing series of his forgeries to attractive sheets with ornamental borders for sale and distribution, and this practice was copied by the firm of Kamigataya, which also produced forgeries. These sheets have been colloquially referred to over the years as 'tourist sheets' as they were largely distributed in Japanese ports where foreigners were visiting and settling. This monograph provides a comprehensive study (in full color) of all the different types and designs of these sheets. In all, 23 different designs of Wada sheets have been identified, which the author has classified into five major groups in chronological order. The study also discusses the various imitations of the Wada and Kamigataya sheets produced by non-forgers. Lastly, the monograph provides an analysis of a number of small booklets (and their imitations) produced by Wada that present his forgeries in a similar format to the tourist sheets.
