DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The first stamps issued in 1865 were printed locally by the printing shop of the Garcia Brothers. The following year new locally printed stamps were issued. The first stamps with perforations were issued in 1879 and they were printed by the New York based Hamilton Bank Note Company. The first commemorative stamps appeared in 1899; they consisted of a set of eight stamps issued to raise funds for the construction of the Christopher Columbus Mausoleum. Issued as a set of eight stamps, the first multi-colored stamps of the Dominican Republic were released in 1913 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Juan Pablo Duarte -- one of the nation's founding fathers.
