TRENTO & TRIESTE 1919

In 1919, Trento and Trieste were annexed to Italy at a time of great economic depression. To bring to an end separate stamp issues for Trento and Trieste, Italian definitive stamps overprinted with the denomination expressed in “centesimi di corona” and “corona” (both in lower case) were approved by Rome in December 1918 and issued between January and April 1919. They remained valid in the Trieste and Trento regions for a few months but continued to be used in Dalmatia until February 1921. On 20 April 1919 the post offices in the Trento and Trieste regions began to use Italian stamps. In May 1919, a 1 Lira Floreale definitive stamp was overprinted “1 corona” (lower case). This stamp and later issues of 1921-2 overprinted “centesimi di corona” or “corona” (both in lower case) were used in Dalmatia only. They remained valid until 19 June 1924, when Italian stamps were supplied to the Dalmatian post offices.
