SMYRNA * SMIRNE

By the early 1900s, some six thousands Italians, mostly from the Genoese region, had settled in Smyrna. At the time, some seven thousand ships called each year at Smyrna. On 10 May 1908 Italy opened a post office at Smyrna’s port; Italian definitive stamps were used even after February 1909, when seven Italian stamps overprinted SMIRNE were issued. The overprint included the face value in PARA or PIASTRA/PIASTRE. In 1911 a SMIRNE/40 Piastre high value on 10 Lire Italian Floreale definitive stamp was issued. The Italian post office was closed on 29 September 1911, at the outbreak of the Italo-Turkish War; it was reopened in late 1912 and subsequently closed on 30 September 1914, following the the abolition of the Capitulations of the Ottoman Empire. At the end of World War I, Smyrna was deemed an area of Aegean Anatolia of “Italian influence and interest”. Italian troops were deployed in Smyrna and a Field Post Office (No. 171) was opened and used by both servicemen and civilians living in the region. The FPO was eventually closed on 15 June 1923. Meanwhile, in June 1922, four Italian definitive stamps were overprinted for use at Smyrna and a small quantity of them sent to Smyrna. A complementary value was prepared in September. These five 1922 overprints are listed as “unissued” by all major catalogues. Used copies are few and widely deemed cancelled to order (CTOs). During this time, Italian definitive stamps were used for the day-to-day postal needs. ******* COPYRIGHT: We own the copyright in this site and in material published on it such as articles, technical profiles, technical information, general information, descriptions and photographs of all items.
