GIOVANNI SIMONE MAYR copyrighted LIMITED EDITION 2013
Condition: GIOVANNI SIMONE MAYR copyrighted LIMITED EDITION 2013
Description: Special limited edition for the 250th Anniversary of the birth of the composer - INTERNATIONAL COPYRIGHT - GIOVANNI SIMONE MAYR (Mendorf, 1763 – Bergamo, 1845) on the 250th Anniversary of his birth. His first opera was successfully staged in Venice in 1794. As a result, he later premiered other operas of his in Venice and in due course was invited to write operas for La Scala and other major opera houses in Italy and beyond. A deeply devout Catholic, in 1805, he established a free music school in Bergamo where, since 1802, he was Maestro di Cappella at the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica; between 1806 and 1815 his most famous pupil was Gaetano Donizetti. He remained loyal to his adopted home-town Bergamo despite the many tempting and lucrative offers. In 1805, Napoleon, who had been fascinated by Mayr’s Lodoiska during his Milanese sojourn, offered him the position of Director of the Paris Opera. Similar offers for prestigious positions in Milan, Naples, Rome, London, Vienna, St. Petersburg, and Dresden followed suit. However, Mayr remained in Bergamo. Although he wrote about 600 impressive sacred music pieces, cantatas and oratorios, he is best remembered for his 70 operas, including Medea in Corinto, Adelasia e Aleramo, Fedra, La Rosa Bianca e la Rosa Rossa. Mayr had a strong influence on contemporary composers, especially the new generation. He also played a major role in shaping the public’s taste by emphasizing the noble aspects of melody, expanding the role of the chorus and that of stage bands. In 1833, Vincenzo Bellini wrote to Mayr: “I adore your immortal operas because they played a role in molding my heart by their merging the language of the soul with the most refined musical taste.” Gioachino Rossini nicknamed him “Daddy Mayr”; Donizetti said he was eternally grateful to have had a teacher like Mayr; and Verdi also held Mayr in high esteem and attended the old composer’s funeral, Rossini was also in attendance.
