Indonesia is a republic in the East Indies. A former Dutch colony when the territory was known as Batavia until 1949. The first stamp was issued in 1864. It was imperforate and depicted King William III. A similar stamp, perforated was issued in 1868. In 1941 Indonesia fell into Japanese hands and Dutch colonial stamps were overprinted for local postal use. Definitive stamps began to be issued in 1943. The Japanese occupation lasted for four years.The United States of Indonesia issued their first stamps on 17 August 1950. Between 1953 and 1958 Indonesia issued stamps commemorating Mother’s Day, Indonesian Independence, and Declaration of Human Rights, to name a few.
