NAPLES
The first postage stamps of the Kingdom of Naples were issued on 1 January 1858. Denominated in grana, their design featured three distinctive elements: an unbridled horse (symbol of Naples), a three-legged Medusa or Trinacria to symbolize Sicily, and three lilies forming the House of Bourbon coat of arms. On 6 September 1860 Garibaldi’s troops occupied the capital. As a result of the annexation of the Kingdom of Naples to the Kingdom of Italy a set of stamps denominated in the old regime’s currency but featuring King Victor Emmanuel II’ profile turned right was issued in mid February 1861.
