PITCAIRN ISLANDS

A South Pacific British Territory of about 2 square miles halfway between South America and Australia. A regular postal service was introduced in 1920. The first stamps were issued in 1940 as a definitive series of 8 pictorial denominations, with 7 of them focusing on H.M.S. Bounty. Two additional values to this series were issued in 1951. The next definitive series had to wait until 1957. It featured various aspects of local relevance including handicratfs, Bounty Bay, John Adams and the Bounty Bible, a map, and a whaleboat.
