ST. LUCIA

St. Lucia issued its first stamps in 1860. The three denominations were devised to pay for the most common postal rates. A One Shilling denomination was added four years later. A Half Penny stamp was prepared in 1863, but not issued. In 1902, a pictorial stamp depicting a local landmark was issued to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Discovery by Columbus. Associated Statehood was granted in 1967; this was mirrored in a set of 11 overprinted stamps issued for the occasion. In 1979, a set of four stamps and one miniature sheet were issued to celebrate Independence.
