TIMOR

Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor on the eastern part and Indonesia, on the western part. The Dutch and Portuguese fought for control of the island until it was divided by treaty in 1859. The first postage stamps used in Portuguese Timor were Portuguese stamps followed in 1884 by those of Macau. In 1884 the first stamps for Portuguese Timor were issued, Macau stamps were overprinted ‘Timor’ for the purpose; two years later definitive stamps inscribed TIMOR” were issued.”
