Ascension is a 34 square miles volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean. First occupied by the British in 1815, in 1922 it became a dependency of St. Helena. In that year definitive stamps of St. Helena overprinted ASCENSION were issued as a set of 9 denominations. In 1924 an ad hoc definitive series inscribed ASCENSION” was issued. It featured the badge of St. Helena. In 1934 a pictorial series of local relevance consisted of ten engraved stamps depicting various vistas of the island.
