The Central American nation of Belize, formerly British Honduras, had its first stamps in 1865. The Colony was granted self-government on 1 January 1964 and issued its last stamps as British Honduras at the beginning of 1973. On 1 June 1973 British Honduras was renamed BELIZE. This was clearly reflected on local stamps. On 21 September 1981 a set of 16 overprinted stamps saluted the Independence of Belize.
