CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS is one of the historical figures most portrayed on stamps. Between 1855 and 1910, Chile issued 130 stamps depicting the Genoese Admiral. From 1892 to 1900 he was depicted on many American and Caribbean countries and colonies to commemorate the 400th anniversary of his discovery of the Americas. By the late 1980s no less than 700 stamps had been issued to honour in one form or another Columbus. That number had more than tripled by the early 1990s when a huge amount of stamps commemorating the 500th anniversary of his discovery of the New World were issued by most countries on earth.
