The first postage stamps used in Switzerland were issued by the cantons of Zürich, Geneva and Basel. The 1848 federal constitution paved the way for stamps to be issued confederation-wide and the first of these came out in 1850. All the 19th century issues of Switzerland are some of the best investments in European philately. Also from a purely collecting standpoint they offer a wide scope for those who wish to specialize. Modern stamps and the Pro Patria and Pro Juventute series are collected worldwide.
