PAPAL STATES
The Pontiff’s State (STATO PONTIFICIO)included the following regions: Aemilia, Marches, Umbria, Lazio and the enclaves of Benevento and Pontecorvo located in the Kingdom of Naples. The Pontiff lost his states as a result of the Independence Wars and eventually the Pontificio came to an end in 1870 when Italian troops entered Rome. The first stamps were issued in 1852 e remained in used for 15 long years. The design of all denominations centers on the crossed keys and the papal tiara. The currency of the first issue is expressed in Bajocchi and Scudi (100 Bajocchi = 1 Scudo, or 4.375 Italian Lire).
