VENEZIA TRIDENTINA - TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE

When World War I started in 1914, Trento was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Following the 3 November 1918 armistice the northern provinces of the Trentino region – which included Bolzano, Merano and Trento – became part of Italy. The Italian army arrived in Trento the following day. During the early days, after the liberation, mail was either stamp-less or franked with current stamps of Italy. This situation continued even after postage stamps were issued for use in the Trentino region. Newly issued stamps created by overprinting Austrian definitive stamps depicting Emperor Karl I (1917-8) or the Habsburg coat of arms (1916-8) with the words “Regno d’Italia” “Trentino” “3 nov. 1918″ on three lines. The typographic overprinting was carried out in Trento at the Enrico Seiser printing shop. Unlike his counterpart in Trieste, Seiser was well supplied and did not need to shorten “1918” to “18”. By December, no less than 17 Austrian denominations had been overprinted. Only eleven 10 crowns “coat of arms” stamps were found at the Trento post office; in due course they were overprinted and given to authorities as a gift. Only about half of them are said to have survived to our days. Sometime later, a second printing of twenty 10 crowns stamps was executed with a grayish-black ink (instead of black). The face value of the stamps was expressed in hellers and crowns of the Austrian currency; the fixed rate being: 1 crown consisting of 100 heller was worth 40c.Italian lira. In some quarters the overprints on stamps depicting the Austrian emperor, or his coat of arms, were reminiscent of the old regime. Additionally, the conversion rate from Austrian currency generated confusion and displeasure. In the meantime Seiser was given the job to overprint Italian definitive stamps with the words “Venezia” “Tridentina” on two lines. Nine different values were so overprinted and issued in early December, but although the stamps were Italian, their face value was meant to be in Austrian crown and hellers and not in Italian lira and cents. In December, in a controversial move the postal authorities in Rome had approved the overprinting of three Italian definitive stamps with face values in the Austrian currency, for use in the Trentino region. The “Venezia” “Tridentina – “¦Heller” overprint on three lines was placed on matching Italian denominations: 5h on 5c, 10h on 10c, and 20h on 20c. The job was given to the Scotti printing shop in Rome. There was also a need for postage due stamps which caused quite a few misgivings until January 1919, when Italian postage due stamps were overprinted and issued for use in both the Trieste and Trento regions. On the whole, the post offices in South Tyrol were not enthused by the new “Italian” stamps and continued until mid-April 1919 to use provisional postage due overprinted locally for the purpose. For many years the status of these “local” postage due stamps created in the aftermath of World War I for use in the South Tyrol, Bolzano, region was that of semi-official issues. However, in recent years Carlo Ciullo found documentation proving their legitimate status. As such the Sassone catalogue has listed them under Trentino Alto Adige.
