ITALY & COLONIES POSTAL HISTORY

The postal service as we know it today was born in Lombardy in the 14th century. The technique of delivering a written message by “posts” originated in the second part of the 1300s in Lombardy when the Visconti dukes found themselves into repeated emergencies. Postal stations were set up to provide fresh horses to the couriers; this allowed the mail to move uninterruptedly, day and night. Initially it was a privilege of the crowned heads, but demand and pressure allowed access to merchants, bankers and private citizens. By the 1520s-30s it became a lucrative business and in due course governments imposed their monopoly on mail service. The term “post” did not originate from the Latin “posita” as often erroneously reported; instead it was first used to describe an early modern, efficient and fast postal service in Lombardy. In due course, the word “post” was then adopted and adapted by most countries: post, in English, Dutch, German, and Danish; poste, in French; poczta, in Polish; posta, in Hungarian; почта, in Russian; poÅ¡ta, in Czech; poÅŸtă, in Romanian; correo [from Italian corriere, corriero, courier], in Spanish; correio, in Portuguese [from Italian corriere, corriero, courier].
