FLORENCE 29 MAY 1591: 425 YEAR OLD ENTIRE LETTER to PRINCISVALLE DELLA STUFA Special Commissioner at BORGO SANSEPOLCRO (near Arezzo). The letter is from LORENZO BERARDI and refers to the incarceration of a cavalryman in Borgo Sansepolcro.
The Della Stufa were a noble family dating back to the 1200s, they were the owners of the famous CALCIONE CASTLE. They were also relatives and loyal allies of the MEDICIS. In 1632 the first-born lineage of the family was given the title of MARQUIS in perpetuity.
*** Large portion of the “nizza†used to seal the letter has survived. The use of sealing letters with a NIZZA began in the fifteenth century; a NIZZA is a strip of paper on which it is struck a dry seal – the nizza is glued to the letter by wax or binding substance. The final (triangular) tongue of the nizza went through a slit of the folded letter reaching the address side. The tongue had to be torn to open the letter. If the nizza was not intact when delivered to the addressee it would be evidence that the letter had been violated. ****** Overall condition of this important and UNIQUE letter: fine to very fine. Signed in pencil by noted expert Dr. Migliavacca to attest authenticity.
