Description

In January 1979, on the first Apostolic pilgrimage of his pontificate, Pope John Paul II visited Mexico. At the time Mexico, unlike at present, did not recognize the Catholic Church in law, and had no relations with the Vatican. However, the Mexicans came out in massive numbers to greet the Holy Father anywhere he went.
In Puebla de los Angeles he told a huge crowd: “This hour that I have the happiness to experience with you is certainly a historic one for the Church in Latin America. World opinion is aware of this; so are the faithful members of your local Churches; and you yourselves, in particular, are aware of it because you will be the protagonists and responsible leaders of this hour.” The visit to Puebla coincided with the Third Conference of Latin America Bishops held there.
