Venice’ La Fenice (The Phoenix) was built in the early 1790s to replace an opera house that had been destroyed by fire. It was inaugurated in 1792 and since then it has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt twice (1836 and 1996). During the 1800s La Fenice was home to numerous world premieres of works by Mayr (Saffo), Rossini ( Tancredi ,Sigismondo , Semiramide ), Bellini ( I Capuleti e i Montecchi , Beatrice di Tenda ), Donizetti ( Belisario, Pia de ‘Tolomei , Maria de Rudenz ), Verdi (Ernani , Attila, Rigoletto , La Traviata , Simon Boccanegra ). During the 20th century the great Venetian opera house saw the world premieres of The Rake’s Progress by Stravinsky, The Turn of the Screw by Bitten, and Prokoviev’s Fiery Angel. Many of the most famous opera singers sang here: Colbran, Pasta, Grisi, Malibran, Donzelli, Tamagno, Schipa, Callas, Tebaldi, Pavarotti, Freni, Caballe, Corelli, Horne, Sutherland and Kraus to name a few.
