â‚¬ 0.85 saluting the fourth centenary of the birth of Martino Martini. The stamp shows in the foreground the detail of a painting dating from the seventeenth century, depicting Father Martino Martini, author of the first modern atlas of China Sinesis Novus Atlas, published in 1655 in Amsterdam, from which a map is shown in the background, both works are preserved at the Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento. Martini was born in Trento and became a Jesuit missionary. He was sent to China where he researched local history and cultivated a great interest in cartography. In modern times Martini is acclaimed as the father of Chinese geographical science. Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Professor Ma Yong had this to say about him: â€œMartini was the first to study the history and geography of China with rigorous scientific objectivity; the extent of his knowledge of the Chinese culture, the accuracy of his investigations, the depth of his understanding of things Chinese are examples for the modern sinologistsâ€.
