2000th Birthday of AUGUSTUS; Maximum Card with the stamp issued by Italy on 19 August 2014 cancelled by matching pictorial first day of issue cancellation. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus — official name Caesar Augustus — was the first Roman emperor (born: Rome 63 BC – died: Nola 14 AD). The founder of the Roman Empire fostered unity and consensus by implementing a complex cultural program, which involved some of the greatest writers in Roman history such as Virgil and Horace. The stamp features the veiled head of the founder of the Julio-Claudian dynasty from a 12 BC statue found in 1910 in a basement in Rome. The Via Labicana Augustus depicts the Emperor as Pontifex Maximus, with his head veiled for a sacrifice. This depiction emphasizes the role of the Emperor as the religious head of the empire.
