Pugs come from China, and the first mention of them is in a Confucius book (551 BC). They arrived in Europe in the late 1600s (Holland) and then crossed the Channel in 1688 to become the favourite pets of William and Mary Of England. In the early 1800s Josephine Bonaparte was enamored with her pug “Fortune”. Other famous pug owners include: Voltaire, William Hogarth, the Marquise of Pompadour, Marie Antoinette of France, the Duke of Enghien, Quen Charlotte (wife of Charles III), Queen Victoria and the Duke of Windsor and his wife Mrs Wallis Simpson-Warfield, Duchess of Windsor, Princess Grace of Monaco, fashion designer Valentino, Andy Wharol, and Lena Horne. ********** A Maximum Card is a picture postcard (normally about 4″ x 6″) with a postage stamp affixed on the view side cancelled (postmarked) with maximum concordance between elements (depiction on stamp matching the depiction on postcard – or elements of it — with a postmark that is as closely related as possible to what is depicted on stamp and postcard). This concordance is not always possible.
