BVI HERITAGE DANCERS: A FOLKLORIC CULTURAL ICON ****
Founded in 1979 by Eileene L. Parsons, the British Virgin Islands Heritage Dancers is an internationally acclaimed fokloric dance troupe of over twenty dancers that performs traditional dances from the Virgin Islands and beyond. The BVI Heritages Dancers have performed in many countries, including the Caribbean, the United States, including the Apollo Theatre (Harlem) 2003, Germany, and Great Britain. The BVI Heritage Dancers have been described as cultural ambassadors of the Territory; their repertory is vast and diverse and is very successful both with Caribbean audiences and international audiences.
They participate in the annual BVI August Monday Festival parade since the 1970s, in 1990 they decided to expand their presence with a cultural float highlighting local cultural traditions such as ‘Rum Makers’, ‘BVI Musicians’, ‘Treasured Memories’, ‘Fungi Music’ etc.
Fungi Bands, also known as Scratch Bands using a number of local instruments often accompany the BVI Heritage Dancers; in fact the traditional music of the BVI is called ‘fungi’ after the local cornmeal dish with the same name. The sweet sound of fungi bands has fascinated crowned heads and heads of state as well as tourists and the indigenous population; fungi music is an amazingly nuanced and charming cocktail of Western, African and West Indian music styles. Many of the dances and Fungi Music have their roots in the musical and folkloric styles going back to the days of slavery.
Images of the Heritage Dancers have adorned postcards, phone-cards, and stamps.
Pictured here are some maximum cards for the 1984 BVI stamps commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation of former slaves [abolition of slavery, 1834] and featuring the August Monday Festival parade highlighted by the participation of the BVI Heritage Dancers and local musicians. The stamps on these maximum cards are cancelled by the special matching postmark for the 9th BVI Stamp Exhibition held in 2000 featuring the theme “Music on stamps”.
