Description

Entire Letter from BASTIA (Corsica, French Island) 4 September 1817
from the Consul of Tuscany in Corsica
to Cavalier Spannocchi, State Counsel and Chamberlain
of His Imperial Highness the Grand Duke of Tuscany,
and Lieutenant General and Governor at Livorno ****
The letter was disinfected on arrival with a fumigation procedure that resulted in light browning of the paper, leaving lighter areas where the tongs holding the letter made contact with the paper while the fumigation was taking place. The letter was fumigated inside and outside and then re-sealed. To do so the health authorities had to open the letter and break the seal of the sender (at right, middle of back flap). ***
The re-sealing was done by applying two red wax seals featuring the House of Lorraine Coat of Arms of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The seal at far right was broken by the addressee and lost (as would be expected), but the seal at left has survived intact, is well struck and
in almost perfect condition — a very rare DISINFECTION seal and possibly the only surviving one in this quality. ***
The A.I.S.P. Handbook rates it at the highest level “RRR” . ***
It records it for 1816; this letter is dated 1817 and therfore it is the latest known use of this DISINFECTION seal.
The text deals with diplomatic matters and specific mention is made of the fact that Tuscan passports are expensive and uncompetitive because the Consuls of Tuscany are not exempt from postage, which in the sender’s view accounts for the higher costs. Interestingly enough, the first two lines mention clearly that the Tuscan Consul will seal the letter which had a packet of “lupini” attached to it with a seal showing his personal Coat of Arms (second from left; largely survived but weakly struck). Mention is made of the “usual” Tripoli pirates raids. ***
A MOST FASCINATING ITEM AND ONE OF THE GREATEST RARITIES OF ITALIAN DISINFECTED MAIL ***
Superb item that opens perfectly for display ***
Signed by noted expert Dr. Migliavacca ***
