Description

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta on 26 May 2014 issued a stamp commemorating the 2000th Anniversary of the death of Augustus, founder of the Roman Empire and its first Emperor. The stamp depicts the statue of the Emperor known as “Augustus of the First Gate” now at the Vatican Museum, discovered in 1863 at the Villa Livia of Prima Porta (First Gate) near Rome. Livia Drusilla was the Emperor’s wife, traditionally known as Julia Augusta. The Emperor is depicted as the Commander in Chief; his breastplate reliefs show Caelus, the sky god, spreading the tent of the sky; Aurora and Luna; the personification of the subjected peoples; the goddess Diana; the earth goddess Ceres/Tellus – similarly represented on the Ara Pacis; Apollo, Augustus’s patron; the personification of the tributary peoples; the sun god Sol; a Sphinx on each shoulder, representing the defeat of Cleopatra by Augustus. Pictured here is a limited edition maximum card with the said stamp cancelled by a special first day of issue postmark.
