€ 0.70 stamp commemorating the 350th anniversary of the first edition of the GAZZETTA DI MANTOVA, a newspaper established in 1664 in Mantova. The stamp depicts the oldest edition (27 November 1665) that has made it to the third millennium, additionally the design includes the skyline of Mantova, and at top right the modern masthead of the popular daily newspaper. During the early years the Gazette was actually a weekly “Aviso†that featured many announcements and some news about the town, the region and the entire peninsula, as well as developments in the major European countries. In 1747 the newspaper‘s masthead claimed to publish “Universal Reports from Europe and other placesâ€. In 1807 the Gazette became bi-weekly and used the masthead “Gazzetta di Mantova†for the first time. After Mantova was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy, in 1866, the Gazzetta began publication on a daily basis. With the advent of fascism in 1920, the daily was virtually forced to close. It re-started publication on 1 July 1946 and can now claim to be the oldest running newspaper in Italy, and one of the oldest in the world.
