THE EXPRESS AIR MAIL STAMPS
By Nicola Simonetti
In Italian, 248 pages, huge amount of color illustrations
Italy issued the world’s first Air Mail stamp in 1917. In the name of speed in 1932 Italy merged the services of Air Mail with those of Express Mail to cover the charges for the fastest services offered by the Italian Post Office by issuing special stamps that consolidated the Air Mail fee with the Express fee. The first stamps of this type were part of the GARIBALDI commemorative set. These were followed in 1933 by a specific non commemorative stamp ESPRESSO AEREO costing 2.25 Lira. During that same year the well known se-tenant trios (TRITTICI) merging all the postal charges for REGISTERED EXPRESS AIR MAIL were issued. These fascinating stamps were issued for the Transatlantic flight by General Balbo and his Fleet.
This book is not a catalogue, yet it gives a vast amount of written and visual information about these unprecedented and fascinating air mail stamps. It includes the use of similar air mail-express stamps in the Colonies and Territories.
Even if your knowledge of Italian is very limited, the amount of color pictures in this book will greatly contribute to your understanding the subject matter.
