Description

ITALY TO INDIA VIA BULGARIA and TURKEY: 3 August 1942, Red Cross Postcard for mail to Italian Prisoners of War from Campello sul Clitunno (Perugia) to a Lieutenant of the Italian Army at Camp 24, Clement Town (Dehra Dun District), India. The Postcard was sent via air mail but the postage stamps affixed on it were removed by a censor officer at some point in transit. The removal of postage stamps is typical of this type of mail. The Postcard shows a circle “217 – I” Italian censor mark as well as a circled handstamp “UFFICIO CENSURA POSTA ESTERA I”, and straight line VERIFICATO / PER CENSURA, all struck in Rome. Furthermore in India, an octagonal “DHP / 5” censor mark, a straight line DHP/51 struck on arrival in India; and a Camp “24” censor mark (triangle-shaped). The Postcard shows a rectangular stamper inscribed “POSTA AEREA PER PRIGIONIERI DI GUERRA/VIA SOFIA – ISTANBUL” struck in red ink on the address side of the Postcard. This air mail route for POWs mail was short-lived and only a very small fraction of the mail was stamped with “POSTA AEREA PER PRIGIONIERI DI GUERRA/VIA SOFIA – ISTANBUL” much rarer than the elusive GERUSALEMME type which had a relatively longer life. Docketed in addressee’s handwriting 5 November 1942. In January 1942, the Italian and British governments reached an agreement on the establishment of an air post service to and from their respective POWs being held in countries outside Europe. Due to war developments the routing for this air service was changed a few times with the view of selecting the safest and shortest possible route. [Signed in pencil by expert Dr. Migliavacca] Very Fine quality for the rare Air Routing hand-stamp which is found in most cases in a lesser quality, and fine overall quality. A HIGHLY DESIRABLE piece of History.
