THE POSTMARKS OF ROME FROM PRE-ADHESIVES TO 1870
I BOLLI DI ROMA
By Mario Gallenga (1979)
This is the elusive PART V of the Gallenga series on Papal States postmarks, which is missing in most sets of this series. In Italian, 152 pp, illustrated throughout, with evaluations.
It includes introductions on the early posts, the postal contractors era 1551-1809, the first Roman Republic (1798-9), the Restoration (1799-1809); the Foreign Post Offices in Rome; the Neapolitan, French, Spanish, Venetian, Tuscan, and Milanese POs in Rome and their postmarks; the Murat interim (January May 1814); the French Military Post in the Papal States (1798-1814), the War Commissioners stamps; the Papal States postmarks of Rome 1814-1851 and then the philatelic era up to 1870. It also includes RAILWAY postmarks, SEA MAIL postmarks; accessory marks; the postmarks of the FRENCH EXPEDITIONARY CORPS in Rome; disinfected mail and health ministry & department stamps; and FORWARDERS mail.
A most useful book with lots of information; easy to use even for those who know little or no Italian. Long out of print and RARE
