€ 0.70 stamp commemorating the 1500th anniversary of the ascent to the papal throne of the 52nd Pope of Christianity: Pope Hormisdas. On 20 July 514 he was unanimously elected Bishop of Rome. After the accession to the imperial throne of Justin and his nephew Justinian, both opposed to the Monophysites who had rejected the Council of Chalcedon, it was possible to reach an agreement (519 AD) with the signing by the patriarch of Constantinople of the act of faith drawn up by Hormisdas. He also reorganized ecclesiastically Spain after the Visigoth invasion. Although Hormisdas faced endless challenges and reigned during very complex times, his pontificate was effective and constructive. He died in 523. His son Silverius wrote his epitaph where mention of Hormisda’s fight against schisms is duly highlighted, as well as Hormisdas untiring efforts to reconcile the Church of the East and the West. He was married before ordination and had a son, the future Pope Silverius. According to the Church biographers, this was a unique case in the history of the papacy.
