Remaindered stocks of Italian definitives were used for overprinted stamps of the Colonies. Typically such stamps originated from sheets that had not passed the quality check for use in Italy because of poor centering and other inconsistencies. Colonial definitive stamps with overprints are normally poorly centered or at best Fine; this also applies to a number of commemorative and pictorial issues. Very Fine centering of most colonial issues is the exception and commands a premium as reflected in all Italian catalogues. To expect Very Fine centering for most Colonial issues is rather naïve.
