Description

MAXIMUM CARD FOR THE VATICAN STAMP ISSUED ON 28 August 2014
to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the death of St. Camillus de Lellis (1550-1614). Born in Abruzzo, Camillus spent his youth in a dissolute style and later enlisted with mercenaries. When his addiction to gambling drove him to poverty he found a menial job with the Capuchin friars of San Giovanni Rotondo. During this time he had a serious spiritual crisis followed by complications from an old wound. He was hospitalised in Rome where he also spent considerable time taking care of the sick. With assistance from well-wishers he started the “Servants of the Sick” (known as the Camillians), later recognised as a religious order. Over the past 400 years the Order has grown considerably all over the world. THE STAMP DEPICTS “ST. CAMILLUS AND THE PLAGUE VICTIMS” – a painting by SEBASTIANO CONCA
