Description

FROM Dr. Migliavacca Certificate that accompanies this lot: RUSSIA, DISINFECTED MAIL – Entire Letter from Constantinople, 16 November 1851, to Odessa (18 November 1851) showing the effects of disinfection procedures: discoloration of the paper due to disinfectant liquid, three vertical slits (two at top, one at bottom) and several punch holes. The oval disinfection cachet of Odessa (Migliavacca Type E, Fig. 7; Tyukov-Vandervelde 8a; only 8 examples recorded) “CLEANED IN THE ODESSA/DATE/QUARANTINE” (ACHISHCH V ADIESS/ / KARANTIN), struck on the backflaps is (as is often the case) above average quality and 70% readable. The Disinfection Number “109” is handwritten on the lower backflap. On the upper blackflap is the fine and rare red cds of the Russian Consular Post Office in Constantinople (Tchilinghirian Type 3) where the letter was posted.

I have examined the above captioned item which is photographically reproduced* here (recto side substantially reduced, and verso slightly enlarged).
In my opinion, this rare item is genuine in all respects and keeping in mind this type of mail it is in very fine condition. I initialled it “GM” in pencil—————
